What is an IP Address?

IP stands for “Internet Protocol”. We know that the internet means the interconnection of computer network globally. Now, what is protocol? Well, a protocol is the rules and instruction under which communication between the computers takes place. So, the set of rules that are followed or used as a standard for communication by the computer is called protocol.

So, we can define IP (Internet Protocol) as the method, consisting of different sets of rules and instructions, according to which data is transmitted from one computer to another on the Internet.

According to Wikipedia, “An Internet Protocol address (IP Address) is a numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication.” 

The IP address is crucial on networking as every computer and networking devices like a switch, routers etc. contains a unique address which is found in the numeric form.
